Hwang Jin Yi (황진이)
Starring Song Hye-kyo and Yoo Ji-tae
Directed by Chang Youn-hyun
141 minutes, 2007

Based on a North Korean novel, and lavishly filmed with exquisite costumes and sets, Hwang Jin Yi is the latest and most sumptuous version of the famous tale of a legendary courtesan and poet from Chosŏn-era Korea. Though educated and literate, Hwang Jin Yi's illegitimate birth relegates her to the role of kisaeng, a female entertainer. As the most desired courtesan of her time, Hwang Jin Yi must choose between respected life at court and her true love.
